A two-day test at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course showcased the new 2.2-liter twin turbo direct-injected V6 Chevrolet and Honda engines with hybrid technology, enabling A.J. Foyt Racing and others to test the capabilities of the hybrid engine.

Santino Ferrucci is a self-proclaimed “over-steer happy, rear-end happy kind of driver.” He emphasized the new cars’ abilities to mitigate weight-related issues as well as the hybrid and overtaking systems, calling it “more of a driver’s car.”

Ferrucci acknowledged the added complexity the new technology brings, stating, “You’re really using it as a balancing tool, and the energy they’re giving you for a lap, it’s a lot of work to be using it every lap, depleting it and reusing it. You’re very mentally busy driving the car, not just physically anymore. You’re going to have to train extra hard on everything that you do.”

Echoing similar sentiments, Sting Ray Robb and other drivers expressed optimism about the system’s potential to introduce new race strategies.
